This card game is played using a standard deck of 52 cards. Although there are several variations, we’ll focus on the basic version for this guide to Rummy. If you’re just starting, don’t be intimidated by some games’ complex rules and strategies. You can always start with the basic form of Rummy and gradually add to your skill set as you develop an appetite for more advanced game versions.
To begin, knowing the objective in a typical Rummy card game is important. In this case, we’ll learn the basics of knowing what cards you may be dealt, how to use these cards in your hand and a few basic strategies for dealing with your opponents.
The Deal
The idea behind a game of Rummy is to try and “run out” your opponent. To do this, it’s important to know what cards you’ll be dealt, how your opponents will try to play against you and, more importantly – what types of hands can give you the advantage over your opponent.
The cards dealt in a Rummy game are divided into two types: playing and non-playing. Twenty playing cards can be played and 21 non-playing cards. This breakdown doesn’t change during the game.
Anchoring The Cards
The first way each player knows how many different hands they will be dealt is by considering the first two rows of cards, known as the “Anchor”. In this example, we have an Anchor of 2 and 6. These numbers will determine the first two rows of cards in each player’s hand. The number on top is the highest hand. The bottom is the lowest hand. So for us, our hands begin with 2 and 6 and 6 and 2.
This may be hard to remember when you start, but it’s important to understand that different card combinations are more powerful than others. For example, in the deck we played, the 2 and 6 are both low cards, but they’re only part of two separate hands. Combining either with a higher card, such as ten or Ace, will give you much more leverage and increase your chances of winning.
The other thing to remember when you look at the Anchor is what cards aren’t included. In this scenario, there are no 3s or 7s in our Anchor, so we know there won’t be any in our hand.
The Start
Each player will be dealt five cards when everyone has had a chance to look over the Anchor. The number of cards you’ll be dealt depends on how many people are playing the game. If there are four players, you’ll each be dealt five cards and so on.
The dealer then takes a card from the top of the deck and places it at the bottom of their stack. This is known as “setting” the deck.
Conclusion
As you can see, there’s a lot you must remember regarding Rummy. The good news is once you master the basic rules, anyone can play.
